Portarlington Recreation Reserve Upgrades: What They Mean for Local Families

Portarlington Recreation Reserve has entered an exciting new chapter following the completion of significant upgrades designed to support local sport, recreation and community activities.

Officially opened in March 2026, the improvements were backed by $3.15 million from the Victorian Government and $600,000 from the Australian Government—a combined investment of $3.75 million.

The completed works include an improved pavilion, upgraded cricket training facilities, improvements to the oval, additional parking, an expanded shed and shared trails.

Supporting Portarlington’s Growing Sporting Community

The reserve is an important meeting place for local sporting clubs, families and community groups.

The Portarlington Football Netball Club fielded 13 football teams and 17 netball teams during the 2025 winter season. Junior participation is also strong, with more than 80 children involved in Auskick and Net Set Go programs.

The upgraded facilities provide greater support for players, coaches, volunteers and spectators, while also creating more opportunities for future participation. The club has expressed an ambition to introduce a senior women’s football team, further expanding the pathways available to local players.

Cricket is another major beneficiary of the project. The new training facility is already being used by the Portarlington Cricket Club, which had three senior men’s teams, a senior women’s team and three junior teams competing during the 2025–26 summer season.

Improvements for More Than Sport

While football, netball and cricket are central to the reserve, the benefits extend well beyond these sports.

The expanded shed provides additional space for the Bellarine Agricultural Society, which hosts the annual Bellarine Agricultural Show at the reserve. The improvements will also support the Portarlington Tennis Club, Girl Guides and the Drysdale Clifton Springs Pickleball Club.

A new shared-use agreement involving the pickleball club is expected to bring more than 300 additional members to the reserve, helping the facilities serve an even broader section of the Bellarine community.

Safer and More Accessible

The upgraded parking and shared trails are also important additions. They are intended to make it safer and easier for people to move around the reserve, whether they are attending training, watching a weekend match, visiting a community event or simply enjoying the open space.

These improvements reflect the reserve’s role as more than a sporting ground. It is a place where residents of different ages and interests can meet, participate and feel connected to their community.

A Positive Investment in Portarlington

Quality community facilities play an important role in making a town an enjoyable place to live. For families considering a move to Portarlington, access to established sporting clubs, junior programs, walking trails and community events can be a significant part of the decision.

The reserve’s location near the Portarlington waterfront, together with its two ovals, tennis and netball courts, playground, pavilion and social facilities, makes it an important local asset.

The latest upgrades strengthen Portarlington’s appeal as a well-connected coastal community where residents can enjoy an active lifestyle and become involved in local clubs and events.
